Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab, part of Living Legends Health has partnered with Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES (E2CCB) to create transformative career opportunities for community members who speak English as a second language (ESL). This initiative provides on-the-job training, language development, and career pathways from entry-level positions to nursing school — no prior experience required.
The collaborative effort connects students enrolled in the E2CCB ESL Adult Education class with Sheyla Gonzalez-Colon, an on-site bilingual HR Assistant at Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, located at 10836 Temple Road, Dunkirk, NY.
“Having someone with Sheyla’s expertise and understanding for students enrolled in our Adult Education ESL program is invaluable,” said William Smock, E2CCB Director for Adult Education. “There are many barriers for our ESL population trying to enter the workforce, so by combining our classes with on-site support provided by CNR we’re able to provide the necessary resources and ease that transition from the classroom into the workplace.”
This program emphasizes equitable pay, secure working hours, health care benefits, referral bonuses, and tuition assistance, ensuring participants have access to stable and rewarding careers. Students will also receive assistance navigating job opportunities and workplace policies, and have access to resources in their native language.
“We’re committed to breaking down barriers and creating opportunities,” said Patti Shea, Director of Talent Acquisition and Development for Living Legends Health. “By combining job training with equitable pay and strong support systems, we’re helping individuals build secure, fulfilling futures.”
“This collaboration empowers individuals to gain valuable skills and thrive in health care careers,” added Colleen Hart, Licensed Nursing Home Administrator for Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab.
Through practical training and a clear pathway to licensed nursing positions, this initiative addresses the growing demand for health care professionals while fostering community inclusivity and economic growth.
ESL classes are held at Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab every Wednesday and Thursday from 5-8 p.m. For more information, please call Colleen Newton at 716-672-4173, ext. 4023.
