Cosmetology Seniors Help Orchard Park Students Go ‘Bald For Bucks’

A dozen people went “bald” for a good cause with the help of Cosmetology students from the Ormsby Educational Center.

Orchard Park High School recently hosted its annual Bald For Bucks fundraiser. Run by the school’s Leadership Skills Class under the direction of Barbara Downs and Kristen Casto, the event raised $10,256 this year.

Twelve participants, made up mostly of high school students, had their heads shaved during the hourlong fundraiser.

Volunteering their time were seven Orchard Park seniors enrolled in Cosmetology at Ormsby: Katie Gourlay, Maren Haak, Juliann Ransford, Isabella Pettit, Madeleine Lockwood, Abigail Van Hoff, and Rylee Chmielowiec.

Cosmetology instructor Cheryl Russell joined her students at the Bald For Bucks event. She said many of the seniors have already completed their internships, with some finding employment at the salons where they trained.

“The ladies did a great job,” Russell said of the annual fundraiser, which also included a basket raffle and bake sale.

In Western New York, funds raised for Bald For Bucks go to the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation. The not-for-profit organization manages all donations benefitting cancer research and patient care at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.
