Led by experienced instructors who are passionate about sports science and fitness training, our Sports Conditioning and Exercise Science program provides students with a solid foundation in exercise physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, injury prevention, and strength and conditioning principles. Through classroom instruction, hands-on training, and practical experience, students develop the knowledge and skills to optimize athletic performance, promote physical health, and prevent injuries.

At Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES, we believe in the power of experiential learning. That’s why our students can apply their knowledge in real-world settings, including athletic training facilities, fitness centers, and sports teams. Whether designing personalized training programs, conducting fitness assessments, or leading group exercise classes, our students gain valuable hands-on experience that prepares them for success in the field.

In addition to technical skills, our program emphasizes professionalism, communication, and teamwork—qualities that are essential for building strong relationships with athletes, clients, and colleagues. Students also have the exciting opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications, such as Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) and Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), enhancing their credentials and employability in the competitive sports and fitness industry and sparking their motivation to excel.

What To Expect

Sports Conditioning & Exercise Science provides foundational skills and knowledge for students pursuing professional certifications in personal training and further education in athletic training, physical therapy, chiropractic, massage therapy, and dietetics. Students learn the science of human health and explore a systematic approach to designing exercise and conditioning programs in an interactive setting. Students study fitness parameters, including resistance training, fat loss, nutrition, and agility. Additional areas of study include medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology, fitness and flexibility, injuries and injury prevention, health/sports psychology, applied kinesiology, motivational and teaching techniques, and cardiorespiratory training. A one-year “Intro to Human Performance” program is available to seniors. Students can intern with area gyms, fitness clubs, health clubs, schools, physical therapy providers, and athletic programs.
